Violet Pinwheels Phlox

Description
This phlox produces upturned petals that look like they could take flight with a good breeze, hence the "violet pinwheels" cultivar name. The ¾" wide flowers open a vivid purple color and age to bright violet—rare colors among moss Phlox. The flowers produced in late March or April can last up to 5-6 weeks, and the low, slowly spreading mounds of dark green, needle-like foliage are soft to the touch. In our trials, two-year-old plants have grown to 18" wide by 4" tall and have been evergreen year round. A perfect marriage of Eastern and Western phlox, it combines beauty and unique flower form with adaptability to heat, cold, and a variety of soils. It is best grown in full sun on well-drained soils with some supplemental water during drought. Grow this vibrant selection in a rock garden, on slopes, over a wall or berm, or at the front of the sunny border. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden in 2008.
