Naomi Japanese Forest Grass

Description

Don't let the shade keep you from enjoying ornamental grasses. Thriving in woodland settings with rich, loamy soil, this shorter grass offers brilliant variegated, red-purple tones in the fall. Growing just 12" tall, Japanese Forest Grass has an arching habit, making it ideal for planting where it can cascade over walls or the edges of containers. Its variegated, creamy yellow and green foliage provides texture, movement and color to shaded areas in the spring and summer. It's a showy addition to borders, containers and edges of pathways. This grass spreads by rhizomes, but is a slow grower. Deer tend to avoid. Hakonechloa macra 'Naomi' PP19897

  • Unique CharactersticsPerennial Resource: Excellent fall color sets this cultivar apart from H. m. 'Aureola'. The creamy yellow and green variegated leaves become flushed with reddish-purple tones in fall. The color is most pronounced in cool weather. Though this grass does spread by rhizomes, it is a slow grower and will not rapidly overtake its neighbors. Plant it where it can cascade down slopes, drape over rocks, crawl over the edges of walls, at the front of the garden, or even in containers. Hakonechloa is grown mainly for its beautiful foliage, though it does produce seed heads. Tiny, inconspicuous reddish brown flower spiklets appear in airy clusters from late summer thru early fall.
