Gold Japanese Forest Grass

Description
This plant makes a perfect filler at the front of a shaded or partly shaded border, giving a pop of golden color to the garden. Commonly called Hakone grass, it is a spreading, shade-loving, deciduous perennial grass that is native both to moist mountain and woodland areas in central Japan, including areas around Mt. Hakone from which its genus name is derived. Gracefully arching, linear bright green leaves form dense, spreading, cascading mounds to 12-18" tall and to 24" wide. Leaves have a papery texture resembling the leaves of some types of bamboo. 'All Gold' is a more compact cultivar of the genus featuring bright golden yellow leaves. It typically grows to 14" tall and will spread over time to 18" wide. The yellow-green flowers have a delicate beauty when viewed closely, but are not particularly showy from a distance. Elegant golden-yellow bamboo-like narrow leaves are the key features, and grow in dense, spreading mounds. This compact variety adds color and texture to the garden. In the fall, inflorescence turns a warm red hue. Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold'
