Chocolate Persimmon

Persimmon-lovers scour markets for this elusive variety—Chocolate Persimmons are hard to come by and rarely commercially grown, but they are so delicious. The tree performs beautifully. It establishes well enough to start fruiting at a younger age and delivers a wealth of brilliant orange fruit. The fruit's ornamental value is underrated. It doesn't just make a gorgeous pop of color in the autumn landscape, you can utilize it like apples and gourds in home decorating. If you like having fresh home-grown fruit at hand, this will help you have a nice long season of things to harvest—the persimmons hold well through fall and into winter, often ripening around October. You absolutely have to make sure it's ripe before eating, the taste is astringent and unpleasant right up until it's ready. When ripe, the flesh is soft with a dark, chocolatey color. At this point, it may look off-putting, but those who know their persimmons will start salivating. The flavor is outstanding—sweet with a dash of nutmeg. Diospyros kaki
