African Night Eucomis

Looking for something new to set your garden apart? Neighbors will stop and ask you about this one. Eucomis is native to southern Africa. It's often called Pineapple Lily because of the unusually shaped flower spikes. This variety is one of the most extraordinary, as it features deep burgundy spring foliage, made even more alluring with the contrasting light purple tones. It delivers long–lasting flowers and foliage. It may look unusual and unique, but it doesn't require any special knowledge to grow—it's actually surprisingly easy–care and tough. African Night Eucomis is only hardy in zones 7–10, but there are plenty of options for growing it in northern zones. We had no problem in zone 6 with good winter protection. Alternately, you could treat it as a tender bulb—letting the foliage die back naturally to give the bulb energy, then digging it up in fall and storing it at about 45–50°F. You could also plant it in a container that you can move inside when the temperature starts to dip. Just remember that pots offer less protection than the ground does, so you'll have to bring it inside before the first freeze. Or if you just want a special feature this year, you could simply treat it as an annual. Eucomis 'African Night' PPAF
